The lich... *SPOILER*
(if you haven't beaten the game yet)
... is the king of orr's personal advisor, Vizier Kilbrahn (sp?). When the Charr did the "searing" and pushed past the wall, they descended onto Orr and the Vizier used a banished arcane magic to sink the whole island. In that process, he somehow managed to survive in the form of the undead lich (but apparently can also transform back to his original body). So since the lich was formed as a RESULT of the searing, he could NOT HAVE CAUSED it. End of story, stop bringing up this hypothesis as it's wrong.

Actually, I just read the lore from Hell's Precipice, and it says "Before the Searing, he was the advisor...".
Also, the Titans are enemies of the Mursaat, so why would they worship them both?
Besides, if he "accidentally" managed to "survive" the explosion, and has the power to cause an explosion that destroys an peninsula, wouldn't YOU too asume he knew what he was doing with the explosion, and just wanted to become a Lich for the sake of completing the Flameseeker prophecies, and cause the searing for the same sake (he has the power to sink Orr, so searing Ascalon is peanuts for him).
And learn to read stickies, THIS IS A 100% SPOILERFULL FORUM, NO SPOILER TAG IS REQUIRED!

If you read the lore a little bit more closely, he sank the peninsula as a last ditch effort to try to save orr. He was never trying to destroy it on purpose, only attempting to stop the Charr. That being said, if he was trying to stop the Charr, why would he unleash them in the first place?
p.s. As to the spoiler tag, I did it out of habit. Just because it's not required doesn't mean you have to rag on someone when they do it.

One thing about the last ditch effort, I see where you are going, but I see you haven't played many CRPGs (Console RPGs, final fantasy and such).
Games where a seemindly noble deed actually was a part of a deeper plot, and in the end you fight the hero of old, who have turned into a gigantic angel/demon/"insert big monster name here".
That said, what prevents the Vizier from all along wanting to become the flameseeker.
What if he heard of the prophecy, and destroyed Ascalon to let the Charr attack so he had a valid excuse for using the black magic?
I know this is a theory with many "what-if"s but if you are used to RPG storylines, this is the most plausible suggestion of what really happened.
Until then, we can only wait till ANet comes with official lore on it.
Sadly, a lot of companies only hint on lore, and leave it up to the gamer to guess it.
But one thing is for sure: the "flaming gods" which the Charr worship are 100% the Titans.

As for this comment, I don't see what basis you assume this on. I've played many RPGs, including the final fantasy series, and others. I could name a few I personally liked (Summoner, Legend of Dragoons, the list goes on). However, as I don't wish for this to turn into a flame war, I'll stop instigating it. Please refer to above ^^ if you want to send any hatemail.
All I am saying about the hypothesis is that the statement: "The 'Lich' caused the searing" is untrue because the 'Lich' did not EXIST before the searing. Could it have been the Vizier? Perhaps, as you have brought up some valid points, but stop referring to him as the 'Lich'. And I'll leave it at that, I'm done with this thread.

Probably been mentioned (didn't bother to read the whole five pages here) but I laughed when I saw Ellie Rigby in Ascalon for the first time. For those not aware of the Beatles, they did a song called Eleanor Rigby.

I hate to burst your bubble, but Bonetti's Defense is an actual swordsman's tactic, they did their research for that scene in Princess Bride, all the maneuvers mentioned are real and the actors spent a good deal of time with a master swordsman to get it right.

To decimate Ascalon, of course. Then he destroyed Orr (on purpose) to kill two birds with one stone (the two birds being Orr and half the Charr army).

How do you know that? I strongly suspect the Vizier has been a lich all along.

Dunno if its been mentioned already, but the Canthan Arena guard for the Competition Arenas in Lion's Arch is named Lo Pan, which is the name of the villian in the movie Big Trouble in Little China.

"a small, burned-out husk of a planet located in distant space"
Also had some stuff about how when the Autobots retook Cybertron the Decepticons were forced to retreat to Chaar and hide out for awhile... thought it sounded moderately similar to the GW backstory
Woah. Totally geeked myself out.

Or it's the homeworld of the Zerg from Starcraft, and is in fact spelled the RIGHT way?

How many of you even know what a "Lich" is? or what its "supposed" to be?
Lich:"Ones whose study in sorcery has even allowed ones to study even past death." (-My dictionary, so shush-)
"Vizier" was the advisor correct? since he used a forbidden spell or something (-or someone did-) which means he must have been a spellcaster/mage/whatever you call em thus making him study into the books upon books of lore teaching him of magic. On the day that kingdom place was distroyed, isn't it possible that his study in magic "might" have allowed him to study even further even beyond death?
In other words...(-Vizier-Big Bang-Him dead-his learnings inspire him to go further-him lich now-you kill-all happy-me <3 monkeys-)

My luck it's like an LoD reference for Hacto and his island with the lava dragon. Shith has a ton of references, none which seem appropriate to me.
Any ideas?

Good one, here's what i've come up with;
Shith - From the Arabic = Variant of Sheeth.
Mal - From the Hebrew = Messenger of God.
So, Hacto being the name of the God in Legend of Dragolian (who also has an Island named after him) - the rough translation would be something like;
"Protection From God Hacto"
or
"Deliver Hacto Protection"
... maybe

About the whole Lich/Vizier thing... Who's to say the Vizier wasn't the Lich before anything of the lore we have read up on? Who's to say he didn't just take the form of Vizier Khilbron to start this entire thing up? We are never shown what happens that causes the sinking of Orr, so everything is basically specualtion on whether or not the Vizier sent the charr out, or if he caused the searing.

This is not an Easter egg, nor a gag, just speculation. In the last cutscene of the final mission, we're given a rather pointed shot of the Scepter of Orr floating up and fading into the air. Destroyed with the Lich? Or a hint that the Scepter will figure in upcoming Chapters?
